The User's Review: KALT Film Leader Retriever, Patented in 1977

Operation Instructions

With the retriever in its closed position (Fig. 1), insert the curved end into the canister as shown in Fig. 2. Holding Tab A in contact with the canister, pull out on Tab B as far as it will go. Next, rotate the spool hub counter-clockwise while listening for a series of one or more clicks from within the canister for every complete turn of the hub. Stop immediately after the most audible click. Now rotate the hub clockwise until it begins to offer some resistance, (2 to 2 1/2 COMPLETE turns for a 36 exposure roll, 2 1/2 to 3 tunes for 20 exposures). Finally, push Tab B in as far as possible and than slowly withdraw the retriever.

U.S. Patent No. 4047653

Note: If there are no audible clicks as described above, push up lightly on the underside of the retriever while rotating the spool hub. This creates a more positive contact between the film and retriever, thereby producing a more defined click.

Following the instructions, I tried the retriever several times and failed. Then I found the Patent document that explains more how it works. I believe this document helps me and post it here. Once  I know how to use it, it works easy for me.
